Workshop

We are pleased to welcome Prof. Dr. Michael Schneider (University of Trier), who will be visiting us from March 24th to March 25th.

Michael Schneider is a professor of Educational Psychology at Trier University. He investigates how knowledge acquisition processes contribute to broader competence development in mathematics and other academic domains. His research interests include prior knowledge effects, conceptual and procedural knowledge, as well as how knowledge acquisition can be fostered by instruction and modelled statistically.

During his visit, several opportunities for exchange are planned:

Chair Meeting Talk

Prof. Michael Schneider will give a talk titled “How Does the Amount of Prior Knowledge Relate to the Size of Learning Gains? A Theoretical Model and Simulation Study” on March 24, 9:00–10:00, in Room 1305 as part of the regular Chair Meeting. Please find a short abstract below:

Experiments show that prior knowledge aids attention, encoding, and understanding. Yet, a large meta-analysis found that the amount of prior knowledge is unrelated to the size of learning gains. The talk presents a theoretical model and quantitative simulation that reconcile these seemingly contradictory findings. Prior knowledge aids learning but is also a proxy for how much a learner already knows and cannot gain anymore, which implies an inverted U-shaped relation between prior knowledge and gains.

Individual Meetings (1:1)

There will be the opportunity for individual meetings with Prof. Schneider on March 24 between 13:00 and 18:00. If you are interested, please sign up for a time slot here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oDbV8RTilwrs4Uyj0Tl6PfrASLXJi31dD17H2XNU

Evening Walk in Munich

On the evening of March 24, we are planning a joint walk through Munich, which will provide another informal opportunity for exchange. If you're interested in joining, please contact Frank Fischer.

Workshop (Project M – Computational Modelling)

Project M planned a modeling workshop with Prof. Schneider on March 25, 8:00 – 11:00. If you would like to contribute to and attend this workshop, please contact Markus Gödker or Frank Fischer.
