Excellent research depends on people with different expertise, perspectives, and ways of working coming together to solve complex problems. Diversity fuels creativity and innovation, though it can also spark misunderstandings, communication barriers, and unproductive conflict when differences remain unexplored.
On September 25th, the workshop “Leading & Collaborating Across Differences” was held. Organized by the Gender and Diversity working group, the session brought together Principal Investigators and Early Career Researchers for a 3-hour interactive session that marked the beginning of a broader conversation on diversity, leadership, and collaboration at SHARP. Rather than providing definitive answers, it invited participants to explore how individual differences shape the way we communicate, work together, and contribute to scientific excellence.
Through Listening Circles, facilitated dialogue, and experiential exercises, participants discovered new perspectives, challenged assumptions, and experienced the value of open, respectful conversations across differences. The workshop aimed to foster curiosity, strengthen mutual understanding, and establish a shared foundation for future dialogue and learning.
Overall, the session offered an engaging, thought-provoking experience that encouraged every participant to contribute to a more inclusive, trusting, and collaborative research culture. On behalf of the Gender & Diversity working group, we thank everyone for their participation and hope to see you in further sessions!
